Self Aligning Ball Bearings

At Simply Bearings we pride ourselves on offering one of the most comprehensive ranges of engineering components in the UK. From oil seals and adhesives to cleaning products and self aligning ball bearings, we have everything you need to complete your project.

Self aligning bearings are ideal for situations where there is a possibility of minor angular misalignment of the housing and the shaft, caused either by a machining or mounting error. This specialist type of double row bearing features an inner ring with two raceways, contained by an outer ring with a single spherical raceway, which allows self alignment. These bearings are available in both sealed and open designs.

A self aligning bearing can continue to rotate freely even when the inner ring is tilting against the outer ring. Low noise electric motors, motorcycles, exercise machines and various items of general machinery where there is a potential for serious shaft deflection of misalignment all make use of self aligning ball bearings.

Ball bearings that can self align are especially useful for applications where rotating speeds are high and there is moderate to low radial and axial loading; however, it is important to note that these bearings are generally unable to carry axial loads without radial loads.

The level of internal friction among self-aligning bearings is significantly less than that of other bearings; therefore, even when rotating at high speed, the rise in temperature is usually small.

With regular bearings, misalignment causes increased levels of rolling friction. This can accelerate fatigue, shorten the service life and increase the risk of shaft binding. There is also a risk of damage to the rolling elements and races. Using bearings that can realign themselves automatically allows engineers to relax constraints on particular components and enables greater tolerances. Doing so reduces component and assembly costs, which in turn allows finished products to better compete in the global marketplace.
