Needle roller bearings are roller bearings which are at least four times as long as their diameter. This means that they have a greater surface area in contact with the actual load, when compared to other cylindrical bearings, allowing them to handle a more substantial load. They are also thinner, and that means that they require reduced clearance between the surrounding structure and the axle itself.

Needle bearings are used in the automotive industry, especially in rocker arm pivots, compressors, pumps and transmission. In the case of a rear wheel drive vehicle, the drive shaft will usually have no less than 8 needle bearings, and in many cases, more than that.
