Connecting links are available for the full range of British (and European) standard duplex drive chains and sprockets. As well as standard sizes, there are variants with short pitches and heavier-duty links for extra load applications. ANSI sizes are listed in another category.

Duplex chains have an additional central run of connecting links, so resemble a double chain. Duplex and triplex chains are chosen for their increased load-carrying capacity or as timing belts. BS duplex connecting link with spring clips are used in quarrying, textiles, printing, agriculture, mechanical conveyors and fairground rides.

Each link consists of two cotter pins riveted into an outer plate. The pins pass through roller bushes and the opposing closing plate to be secured by a spring clip. Note that clips are fitted with the closed edges facing the direction of chain travel.

Renold have made chains and links since 1879 and Sedis since 1895. A wide range of pre-stressing, heat-treatment and chemical finishes (including chromation, phosphation, nickel and zinc plating) has been developed to increase their durability, and Renold's "blue and "synergy ranges exceed ISO606 fatigue resistance requirements by 60%. However, it's sensible to choose the link that matches your chain.

Protective finishes are recommended for high wash-down environments like agriculture and abattoirs or for exposure to saltwater or chemicals. Use extra-high-durability chains in locations where regular lubrication is impractical.

Dimensions

The pitch is the distance between pins. Inside width is the distance between inner side plates. Roller diameters should match the sprocket teeth.

Wear

Wear increases the link spacing, causing chains to "stretch and mismatch the sprocket pitch. A long-term consequence is erosion of the sprocket teeth, so inspect the chain's fit to the sprockets regularly. You can check timing belts with a timing light. The more difficult it is to check or replace chains, the more sensible it is to invest in longer-lasting chains and links.

Lubrication

Regular lubrication improves service life, reduces noise and keeps components cooler by reducing friction. A key area is the gap between the pin-link plate and roller-link plate on the slack side of the chain. Some links and chains are pre-lubricated. We recommend you continue using the manufacturer-recommended lubricant and avoid mixing oils from different suppliers.

Additives in spray lubricants help the oil stick to the chain but also attract dirt, transforming into an abrasive paste that accelerates wear. Ensure sprays are recommended for your operating environment - otherwise light mineral oil is recommended. Avoid heavy oils and grease.
