Pilot Bored B/B Type Tyre Drive Coupling Assemblies

Pilot bored B/B type tyre drive coupling assemblies are shaft couplings with good tolerance to vibration, misalignment and moderate torque in any angular plane or in several planes simultaneously.

The B/B designation indicates they are pilot bored for final machining on site, allowing for different methods of shaft attachment either side or to keep units in stock adaptable for different shaft couplings when and where required.

These pilot bored B/B type tyre drive coupling assembly units consist of a pair of matching pilot bored steel flanges, interlocking plates, a central buffering rubber compound tyre (split for easy insertion), and the associated fixing bolts.

We also have similar units available pre-machined for outward and inward tapered bushes (denoted H/H and F/F), compatible bushings, replacement tyres and FRAS variants available in other sections. Usually, B type flanges accommodate comparatively larger shafts than F or H types.

Pay attention to the technical data when selecting pilot bored B/B type tyre drive coupling assemblies, as they vary considerably in maximum rotation speeds, power transmission ability and torsional stiffness. If you are uncertain of your requirements or don't see the precise assembly you need, our expert staff will be happy to advise and source the most appropriate pilot bored B/B type tyre drive coupling assembly units for you.

Features

These couplings have a host of desirable features. Their compact versatile design is easy to fit in situ, they are low maintenance and lubrication free, and they are excellent for buffering shock, vibration, and torsional oscillations. Four degrees of shaft misalignment can typically be accommodated, and 12 degrees of shock absorption. By dampening shock and vibration, they extend the lifespan of other components in your transmission system. They are often chosen for geared systems to eliminate snatch on drive take-up.

Drives can be reversed in direction, as the reinforcing cords inside the tyres are bidirectional. The natural rubber tyres are tolerant of temperatures from -50?C to +50?C, and most chemical environments.

Fitting

Care and accuracy should be employed in the assembly of your pilot bored B/B type tyre drive coupling assembly units:

  • First ensure all parts are perfectly clean.
  • Fit the external clamp rings over the shafts.
  • Use a torque wrench to fit the taper lock bushes.
  • Use a vernier to get the optimum gap between the hubs (critical for float and misalignment tolerance).
  • Insert the intervening backing plates, leaving the bolts loose until after tyre is fitted.
  • Fit the cut tyre, using a rubber mallet if necessary to seat it fully in position. The edges of the cut typically leave a 2mm channel (more in larger couplings).
  • Tighten the clamping rings with the torque wrench.

Once assembled, a dial indicator meter can be used to check for any run-out due to shaft buckling or off-centre boring of the flanges.

To replace the tyre, it is only necessary to loosen the bolts. No machinery needs to be moved, significantly reducing downtime.
