Cutting lines

Note that different Al-Ko models have different Al-Ko strimmer spool and lines specifications. The actual cutting lines differ in number, length and thickness. There may be either one or two cutting lines in your head assembly, and the length of each line on a full spool varies from three to eight metres. Cutting line diameter in Al-Ko strimmers is usually 1.5mm or 2mm. Check your manual to ensure you buy the spool variation intended for your model.

Even with good-quality strimmers such as those from Al-Ko, inexperienced users often struggle with line feed issues. These are easily avoided with a little care.

Al-Ko spool head assemblies use the convenient bump method to feed through more cutting line; however, you still need to keep an eye on the strimmer to ensure you maintain the line at the appropriate length. If you neglect this, you could lose the end inside the spool.

Al-Ko strimmer spool and lines require regular maintenance and replacement. The cutting lines are intended to wear down in use and therefore must be periodically replaced, so check occasionally that your spool still contains plenty of freely-running cord. At the same time check your Al-Ko spool head assemblies are clean, intact and not cracked.

In use, take care to avoid the possibility of hard impacts with ground, fences, brickwork, or with thick woody-stemmed plants or sinuous leaves. If you need to approach a particularly dense clump of grass or shrubbery, move in gradually so you don't suddenly slow the motor. Overheating your strimmer by continuous use can also contribute to line feed problems.

For heavier duty cutting purposes, consider a metal-bladed petrol-powered trimmer.
