The main purpose of all thrust ball bearings is to cope with a higher axial load than would be manageable by products that are suited to radial forces, so they deliver minimal radial load bearing performance capabilities, as this is not their primary specialism.

For single direction thrust ball bearings, the setup comprises a ball cage sandwiched between two washers. Most models make use of steel cages, although larger products can be fashioned from brass.
