EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber that is suitable for a broad range of applications across industry. Ethylene content varies from around 40 per cent to 80 per cent, and the higher the ethylene content, the more durable the rubber. EPDM can withstand temperatures from as low as -50c to as high as 125c.
O rings are one of the most widely used and simplest forms of seal thanks to the fact that they are generally inexpensive, reliable and easy to mount. They are found everywhere from pump and engine shafts to SCUBA diving gear and space shuttles. O rings can be used as shaft seals, enabling linear and rotary movement in dynamic applications such as hydraulic cylinder pistons, but they are also successfully and safely applied in static applications as face-to-face seals.
EPDM rubber is widely used for O rings across industry because of its very high level of resistance to ozone, temperature variations and weather. EPDM also exhibits good resistance to steam and polarised substances, and it is a strong electrical insulator. These qualities make EPDM oil seals the perfect choice in situations requiring handling, transport or storage of ketones, water or varying temperatures, alkalis and hydraulic fluids.
On the other hand, the chemical structure of EPDM makes it largely incompatible with hydrocarbon-based fuels such as gasoline, kerosene and oil, along with strong acids and halogenated solvents. EPDM O rings are therefore excellent for applications where nitrile or FKM synthetic rubbers would not be chemically appropriate, and vice versa.
