Universal Joints and Protective Gaiters
A Universal Joint, known by various names like U-joint, Cardan joint, or Spicer, connects rotating shafts to operate together despite misalignment. It consists of two 90 degree oriented hinges linked by a cross shaft, with options for single, double, and telescopic variants. These joints are adaptable for different speeds, with steel or stainless steel construction and plain or needle roller bearings.
Commonly employed in machinery drive shafts, Universal Joints vary in shapes and sizes to accommodate diverse applications. They transmit torque and rotary motion between non-aligned points, offering flexibility in operation. While not constant-velocity joints, they facilitate free movement between misaligned shafts, with telescopic options for varying distances.
Synthetic Protective Gaiters are used with Universal Joints to ensure ongoing lubrication, especially in plain bearing models, and to shield against corrosive environments or debris. Hexagonal and square bore variations are also available for different needs.
