Sharpening is a matter of making the machine safe (in the case of battery and mains powered chainsaws disconnect the power source and make sure petrol machines are off and cold to reduce the risk of burns from hot engine parts), then mount the chain bar in a vice if possible and file the cutting teeth in the same direction as the angle of their orientation, a few strokes on each tooth will bring a dull chain back to life.
